The primary limitations of AIS static data stem from its reliance on manual configuration and the absence of automatic validation. The information comprises the MMSI, call sign and name, IMO number, length and beam, ship type, and the location of the electronic position-fixing antenna. This data is typically entered during installation and updated only when specific vessel attributes change. Because these fields are configured aboard, they require manual updating after relevant changes occur. Consequently, static data can become stale, contain invalid or duplicated identifiers, or be associated incorrectly with the wrong vessel.
Receiving a plausible static report does not authenticate every field as current or correctly associated with the observed vessel. The officer of the watch should check own-ship static information when there is reason and at least once per voyage or once per month, whichever is shorter. The MCA also recommends checking transmitted information via another vessel or shore station to mitigate the risks of unverified inputs.
