What Is AIS Static Data?

AIS static data defines a vessel's permanent identity and physical characteristics. It includes the MMSI, call sign, name, IMO number, length and beam, ship type, and antenna location.

This information is generally entered at installation and changes only when specific attributes like dimensions or identity are updated. Unlike dynamic position reports, static data is carried separately in Message 5 for Class A vessels or Message 24 as an additional report.

Officers should verify own-ship static information at least once per voyage or monthly, whichever is shorter. The MCA also recommends checking transmitted details via other vessels or shore stations to ensure accuracy.
