Why Does AIS Vessel Identity Matter?

AIS vessel identity matters because it enables accurate bridge identification and reliable target tracking for maritime situational awareness. Correct association prevents misidentification, while errors can lead to dangerous confusion on the navigation display.

AIS static identity information includes MMSI, call sign and vessel name, IMO number, vessel dimensions and ship type. MMSI, call sign, name and IMO number are configured data rather than measurements made by a receiving station; relevant fields need amendment after identity or ownership changes. Invalid or duplicate MMSIs can produce misleading target association, including a display that appears to show one vessel jumping between positions.

Because displayed AIS identity is not authenticated or conclusive without independent corroboration, verification is essential. Own-ship transmitted identity can be checked through another vessel or shore station, and USCG describes a verification service that highlights certain static-data or encoding discrepancies in its own coverage.
